Remember the 1997 Asian financial crisis? Or the 2001 Dot-Com bubble burst? Or the 2008 global financial crisis? If life has taught us anything, it’s that a recession can hit every so often. And when it does hit, your job can become as fragile as a piece of glass.
Well … unless you’re holding these occupations.
1. Tuition Teacher
Just look around you. Which Singapore child don’t attend tuition classes? The Singapore tuition industry is stated to be worth $1 billion dollars a year, meaning Singapore parents are spending that much in total sending their kids to tuition. And tuition classes don’t stop even when the economy is not doing well!
Plus, not to mention, there are many MOE teachers jumping over to be tuition teachers because of the higher pay too.
2. Human Resource
Every organisation needs HR, whether it’s a startup or MNC.
But you should be prepared to tackle a wide variety of tasks, including but not limited to recruiting, treating new joiners to an atas meal at a restaurant, updating the employee handbook with complicated words no one understands and putting your life on the line by stopping the occasional Nerf Gun battle.
The job of the doctor is not only highly paid, but it’s recession proof too. People get sick and need medical advice, regardless if there is recession or not. And probably that’s why most parents’ dream is for their kids to become doctors.
However, the only thing that is stopping most people to become doctors is the ultra-high barrier to entry into medical schools. Yes, you have to be super smart! (or super rich!)
4. eBook Publisher & Seller
This is not known to many, but the eBook market is a huge recession-proof market. Market research has shown the number of digital books sold has far exceeded physical books. Successful eBook Publishers have made few thousands to tens of thousands of income, depending on the number of books they sell.
Specifically, you also want to sell your eBooks on Amazon. The world’s largest marketplace has a ready-made platform where you can list your eBooks. The platform has made it very simple and easy for anyone to become a publisher and eBook seller.
Worry about how to write, what books to write? Nah. There is a method to become Amazon best sellers, selling lots of books, without writing a book yourself (if you choose not to).
This method has allowed many Singaporeans to build a stream of recession-proof income, on top of their day job. It’s effective as you don’t need a degree, or huge capital, or writing skills to start.
