Travelling … name me someone who doesn’t want to do it all 365 days of the year.
I’m Desmond Ong, and this is what I’ve been doing for the last 6 years. Well, not all 365 days of the year, but I spend over three quarters of my year travelling around the world.
I spend about 2 hours every morning rooted to my laptop, and then I’m off swooshing through the snow in Japan, throwing myself off a cliff in Australia and sipping on the finest wines in the gorgeous Italian countryside.
By far, the most common question I get is: “How do you make money travelling?”
Here are my answers – but bear in mind that I no longer do the first two activities. If you want to know what I’m doing NOW to pay for my travel expenses, head straight to point #3.
#1. Freelance Writing
When I first toyed with the idea of making money while travelling, I went online and searched for the keywords ‘Make Money Online’ … because the most basic rule that you need to start making money without being – you know, physically – attached to a seat in the office is that you must be able to work from anywhere, right?
True enough, I found several recommendations to be a freelance writer. I didn’t need to be in an office … wherever there was Wi-Fi, I could work.
Since I was already taking a few short trips per year (funded by the part-time jobs in my youth, no less!), I had travel stories to share … and the websites needed content, so it was an easy exchange of money.
But the income wasn’t consistent. Sometimes the websites needed articles, while at other times, they didn’t.
I realised I couldn’t depend on others to give me money-making opportunities. These days, I no longer chase money from freelance writing as I was able to earn more money working on my own blogs than writing for others.
#2. Start A Blog
I decided to work for myself so that I could earn a more consistent income. In fact, having my own blog presented me with even more money-making opportunities.
I finally had my own identity, building up my very own base of loyal audience as my blog grew. This attracted brands which wanted to reach out to that audience base. For the first time ever, companies were chasing me for business.
I put up advertisement banners for these brands on my blogs, wrote sponsored articles for them and mentioned them in my other blog posts whenever I could.
Speaking of my other blog posts, I also dropped links to hotels I recommended in my articles. These links led readers to a hotel booking site – and if my readers booked the hotels from my links, I would receive a small commission from the hotel booking site.
However, there’s one very major flaw in this money-making method. In order for brands to keep wanting to collaborate with you and to ensure that there are people who will keep clicking on those links to give you commissions, well … you have to make sure thousands of people visit your blog every month, right
This meant I had to keep updating my blog with fresh content – regardless of whether I had a sponsorship deal with companies or not. I sunk a lot of time … way too much time into doing free content to maintain my audience base. Simply put, it was time consuming.
#3. Sell Digital Products … Online
Is there a money-making method that can give me a consistent income AND doesn’t take up too much of my time, so I can have enough money and time to travel around the world without holding an actual job?
Luckily for me – and you, YES!
You see, I realised that in order for me to be able to travel around the world and make money at the same time without worries, I needed a hands-off money-making system.
That was when I hit the jackpot … digital products. These can range from simple eBooks (I once made $1,500 from a 5-page long eBook!) to video courses on your favourite topics (e.g. if you like cooking, you can create a cooking video!).
These digital products can be quickly created from free, common online resources – and even easier to deliver to your customers, who can download your products and enjoy them immediately. They also stay on the virtual store shelves permanently, so they can make you money … forever, even when you’re asleep or travelling.
So why exactly do I spend 2 hours every morning on my laptop?
Or like this …
Well, like selling anything, I need to promote my products and build a demand for them.
And you definitely don’t need an advertising degree for that. In fact, if you already have a Facebook account, you’re already all geared up for success!
So yes, I spend 2 hours every morning on Facebook – which I’m sure most of you’re already using daily.
